Sardis Park
January 27th 2010
We stopped for a walk at Sardis Park on January 27th with a blue sky and a little sunshine the pond had American Coots as usual with their wonderful plumage and distinctive voices.

Pied-billed Grebes paddled along quietly minding their own business.
Mallards preened and spent time along the edge of the pond or greeting people at the gate in hopes that someone brought a snack. Even though it is not a good idea to feed the ducks as it can make them unafraid of people which could lead them to become a hunter’s dinner.
Common Mergansers floated quietly along as they spent time together.
A few Northern Shovelers along were found paddling along on the pond.
American Wigeon were there in good numbers, grazing on the grass and paddling in the pond.
Soon, we heard a cacophony of sound and when we looked up an extremely large flock of Cackling Geese came into sight. As they started to land, some of them flipped sideways and upside down to release some of the air from their wings in order to drop down to the pond easier. The closer they got, the more sound happened and then when they landed, the sound dropped a bit, then a bit more. Eventually, they became a lot less vocal.

While we were scanning the Cackling Geese across the pond, Bruce noticed a Greater White-fronted Goose in their midst. As we were walking around the pond, we were amazed at its voice.
