Sardis Park
February 24th to 28th 2010
Sardis Park was full of activity this week; when we took a few walks around the pond; we enjoyed watching the splashing of the various water fowl feeling spring in the air.
Bufflehead Ducks chased each other across the pond as they dived for their meals.
American Coots literally “ran” across the water after each other in wild games of which one was the alpha male.

Cackling Geese paddled in little groups, although the pond was full of them on a couple of days.
The Greater White-fronted Goose that hangs out with the Cackling Geese was seen across the pond.
Pied-billed Grebes called to each other with a haunting hooting sound.

Two male Mallard Ducks locked in each other’s sight wrestled for quite some time in an all out battle for supremacy.

The little Lesser Scaups motored over to visit us at the edge of the pond.
Northern Shovelers were acting up showing each other who was the boss. Males and females bobbed and nodded their heads to each other and males chased each other in abandon.

American Wigeon grazed in large flocks on the grass at the edge of the pond so that they could splash into the water at a moment’s notice when a dog or children appeared too close to them.

The weather is more like spring than winter so we are finding it hard to believe that there are still over 20 days left to wait until spring arrives.
