Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
February 24th to 28th 2010

Walking at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve at this time of year can bring a surprise around any corner at any time.

The crocus, in the garden and the Osoberry and Salmonberry in the forest sing of spring arriving soon.

Bufflehead Ducks are still visiting the lagoons.

Black-capped Chickadees are a resident bird and always ready to pose for a photo.

Double-crested Cormorants are a winter resident and can be found on logs after their fishing expeditions.

House Finches are singing more often and can be easily found.

Canada Geese are staking out possible nesting sites.

Pied-billed Grebes stop to take a look at us before continuing on their way.

One rainy afternoon, we found a Crow perched on a mossy branch.

Mallard Ducks are another easily found on logs on the lagoons.

Common Mergansers float along the lagoon waters before diving for their food.

Hooded Mergansers can be found in pairs along the slough on the dyke road next to the heronry.

American Robins colours always look bright in the rain or sunshine.

Little Song Sparrows are singing at the top of their lungs as they get ready for their nesting season.

American Wigeon can be found in sheltered areas around the East Bird Blind or the South Lagoon.

Some Wood Ducks are paired up and checking out nesting sites in trees and duck boxes. We found a pair checking out a hole in an old cottonwood tree.

A male and female Pileated Woodpecker call to keep in touch with each other as they travel their routes gathering grubs and insects from old fallen or dead trees.

A Great Horned Owl has taken over an abandoned hawk’s nest; perhaps we will be lucky to see owlets before too long.

Four Killdeer showed their colours on a farm field across the road from the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. We had to stop and watch them, when we glanced away we had to spend time to relocate these marvellously well camouflaged birds.

We enjoyed visits with Alice, Val, Pearl, Natasha, Lois, Rachel, Connie, Gordon, Dick, Kay and Karen after our walks during this week.
