Sardi Park
1st to 5th 2010
We took a couple of walks at Sardis Park over the last week and were delighted with all of the activity.
American Coots are one of our favourite birds.
Canada and Cackling Geese were abundant. It was bath time one afternoon for the Canada Geese; we were amazed at the sounds of their wings hitting the water while they sent drops of water flying.
The Cackling Geese brought the little Greater White-fronted Goose with them.
Mallards are everywhere at the park. This little female was taking a time out on a tree branch overhanging the edge of the pond.
Common Mergansers were diving for fish; one female caught quite a large fish for her size.
The Lesser Scaup were sleeping both days that we visited.
Northern Shovelers kept each other company while avoiding most of the population on the pond.
A Spotted Towhee surprised us by hopping onto a branch at the edge of the pond.
The main attraction was the American Wigeon; first they paraded by in their finery. The males sported various head wear while the females all looked similar. We included a close view of their pretty feathers. After the parade one of the females started a war among the males. She kept encouraging one of the males to keep the others away. There was a lot of noise, plenty of wing displays, lots of open bills and some vigorous splashing. We left them while they were still in the midst of deciding which male was the alpha male but we could see that the little female was actually the one in charge.
