Great Blue Herons & Eagles
March 1st to 4th 2010
The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Heronry is full of activity at this time of year. They are enjoying each other’s company socializing; some of them are already starting to brood on their nests.

There is a Bald Eagle nest farther out in the forest quite near the Heronry. This pair defends the area from any interloper, which is a benefit to the Heronry on some levels. While we were visiting the area, we saw a young Eagle pass through which brought the resident pair to action to rid it of their area.
Another afternoon the Heronry was under its normal routines, some of the Herons were jousting, others putting sticks in nests and others already covering eggs while the resident Bald Eagles kept company in the midst of the goings on.
All of a sudden one of the Bald Eagles dived off its nest after a juvenile Golden Eagle flying through the Heronry. All the Herons flew into the air at once like a fireworks display and wheeled around the tops of the trees, heading off to the Salwein Creek area. The Bald Eagles chased the interloper away and the Herons slowly came back to the nesting site warily watching the skies around them.
One of the Bald Eagles returned to their nest while the other one patrolled the skies for awhile before returning to its mate.
When we left most of the Great Blue Herons had returned to their nests while others were busy jousting in the setting sun in trees nearby.
