Great Blue Heron
March 5th to 8th 2010

The Great Blue Herons at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, B.C., Canada are always a source of interest for us.

The last four days have found us watching them with respect as they go about their everyday lives. We found the heronry empty on Friday when we took our first walk out to the heronry. We think that they must have had another fright from the juvenile Golden Eagle but we have no evidence to prove that. Our return in the afternoon found most of them returning to their nests.

On Saturday the heronry was getting back to normal. By Sunday we found every nest with two herons on it and there were several new nests being built. We watched some of the Great Blue Herons choose sticks for nests from the ground and others tried to gather branches attached to the trees nearby. They jousted with each other as they went about their daily routines.

Monday came along with a cold wind blowing across the heronry. A similar wind came last year along with a snow storm causing the Great Blue Herons to leave their nests for two days to take shelter along the edges of the lagoons and marshy areas. This year we found that the Herons were taking shelter from the wind in the marshy areas again.
