Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
April 9th to 13th 2010

We always enjoy our walks at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, B.C., Canada. Now that spring has started to bring green leaves and flowers to the world, even the birds are happier.

Red-winged Blackbirds are a common find along the paths. Some days were sunny and others cold, wet and windy but it didn’t deter the Blackbirds activities at all.

One afternoon, Bufflehead Ducks were busy courting on the South Lagoon. We can still find them on both lagoons but soon they will head to their nesting grounds.

We enjoyed watching Black-capped Chickadees carving a nest in a dead tree trunk.

Two Brown Creepers were hunting insects and chasing each other up tree trunks near the path of the Salwein Creek Loop.

The Dogwood is starting to flower at the Rotary Interpretive Centre.

Downy Woodpeckers were found in several different areas.

Frogs were easily seen in marshy areas.

American Goldfinches were seen near the Rotary Interpretive Centre.

The Great Horned Owl was sheltering its offspring from a rather harsh wind.

A few young Great Blue Heron were found fishing near the Rotary Interpretive Centre at the edge of the North Lagoon. Some were flying past as we watched the others fishing.

A little male Rufous Hummingbird dive bombed us with his haunting cry as we walked along the Salwein Creek trail.

Juncos were also found at the edges of the Salwein Creek paths.

A Ruby-crowned Kinglet stopped for seconds near the benches at the South Lagoon.

Mallards were found all along the routes that we took.

Ring-necked Ducks were starting to get their finest breeding plumage.

American Robins are starting to nest; we always stay far away from a nest and never get close enough to make a bird uncomfortable.

Turtles are becoming a common sight in a few areas around the lagoons.

We stopped in at the Rotary Interpretive Centre for visits with Brenda, Tony, Janet, Marilyn, Val, Barb, Mike, Cynthia, Pearl and Ivy. We waved to Orson as he passed by on his way down the main road and said a quick hello to Herm who was on his way to do a count of the Heron nests.
