April, 2010

April 14th to 17th 2010

We have had some cool days and some warm days with lots of walks that were enjoyable. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is one of our favourite places to go for a walk.

Red-winged Blackbirds are a common sight at this time of year.

Bufflehead Ducks were busy courting on the South Lagoon one afternoon.

Bush Tits are often found along the paths.

Black-capped Chickadees stopped long enough for us to take photos.

House Finches sang and glowed in the sun.

Northern Red-shafted Flickers are easy to find at this time of year.

Frogs are also easy to find with the warm sun bringing them up to sun bathe.

A Golden-crowned Sparrow checked out the area near the Rotary Interpretive Centre.

Canada Geese are nesting now.

Hairy Woodpeckers called to each other as they searched for insects near a path.

Red-tailed Hawks soared overhead.

Great Blue Herons are nesting now but we often see young ones fishing in different places while we were surprised to find one with a stick in its beak for nesting material perched on a bench with three Wood Ducks standing in front of it.

There are a few Wood Ducks still found at the lagoons. A male and female checked out the Wood Duck box at the Salwein Creek Loop.

A male Steller’s Jay impressed his mate with tasty morsels fed to her. He proved his ability to provide by bringing many insects to her. Just before he hopped over to her with the insects he would chatter away to announce that he was bringing them.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets hopped from branch to branch in search of insects to eat.

American Robins are a resident of our area and easily found now.

Song Sparrows sang their pretty songs and stopped to listen for a reply.

Squirrels were seen eating bits of Cottonwood seeds.

Tree Swallows chattered to each other and stopped for a moment’s rest on strategic perches.

Turtles can be found on the logs floating on the lagoons.

White-crowned Sparrows were very active in several locations.

While watching the Great Horned Owl nest, the little Owlets popped up in front of the adult and posed for a few photos. Even though they are quite far away from where we can see them, they were cute to see.

We stopped in at the Rotary Interpretive Centre for visits with Janet, Ann, Eileen, Jean, Marilyn, Kay, Mary, Val, Alice, Muriel, Walter, Cynthia and Gordon. We said hi to Dawn and the Pathfinders who were busy ridding the area of blackberries. We also enjoyed a visit with Doug and Stella who were busy working in the garden behind the Rotary Interpretive Centre. They have done a marvellous job of the garden.
