Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
April 28th to 30th 2010
Another rainy, cold, windy few days but we still enjoyed our walks at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.
Black-capped Chickadees are really busy now with nesting but one stopped for a moment for a photo.
House Finches are easily found at this time of year.
Golden-crowned Sparrows stopped near the wild rose garden at the bottom of the stairs.
The little Canada Goose Goslings were enjoying the wet grass.
A Hairy Woodpecker stopped on an old stump.
There were a lot of Mallard Ducklings to be seen.
A Red-tailed Hawk was watching the same Mallard Ducklings.
Great Blue Herons were found in several locations including the Heronry. . We can hear Heron Chicks demanding attention and food when we stand near the Heronry. The incessant chatter is most intense when all the chicks start up at once.

Lincoln’s Sparrows were found as well.
American Robins were busy finding food, some fluffed up to keep warm in the chilly wind.
Lesser Scaup were still on the North Lagoon.
A Green-winged Teal was at the East Bird Blind.
We also found several Wood Ducks on a fallen tree over the North Lagoon, as well as a few arguing over a very long log to stand on.
A few Spotted Towhees were seen.
The little Great Horned Owlets were standing by themselves in the nest when the mother finally decided that the wind was too cold and hopped back into the nest to keep them warmer. We heard her calling to her mate and he responded.

We stopped for a visit with Marcia and waved to Cynthia, Val and Orson during our walks.
