Sardis Park
May 11th 2010
We took a short walk around the Sardis Park pond on the 11th in the sunshine.
A pretty male Red-winged Blackbird perched in a Pine tree with a beautiful clear blue sky behind him.
The Toulouse Goose was at the entrance, enjoying the lawn with a few Canada Geese.
Turtles sunned on the logs.
Two American Wigeon were still visiting the pond.
A few little Wood Duck Ducklings paddled past us in the shade of a Willow tree.
A Mallard Duckling was close by with its mother.
Canada Goose Goslings of varying ages put on shows for us. Near the south edge of the pond an adult took control of its goslings to move them away from a dispute under way by a few Canada Geese in the water near them.
At the west edge of the pond, another set of older goslings marched in a row down into the water with three adults. When they got to the north end of the pond, one of the adults started to bathe by diving under water. The goslings started to follow the adult’s example diving and popping back up again; after doing this several times, they enjoyed a real bath time at the edge of the water under the supervision of the adults. Soon, they all came out to dry off.
We also found a few younger goslings sleeping near their parents.
