Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
May 13th & 14th 2010

The weather has been perfect with sky blue skies and sunshine, it is so nice to get out for our walks around the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.

Red-winged Blackbirds glistened in the sun.

A male Lazuli Bunting perched in a Willow shrub with the sunlight directly behind him blocking the incredible colours with the strong light.

American Goldfinch sang and chased each other.

Another new set of Canada Geese Goslings were with their parents near the Rotary Interpretive Centre.

A male House Finch perched on the overhead wires waiting for his newly fledged chicks to catch up to him. They create quite a din when they do.

Rufous Hummingbirds were seen in many different areas buzzing along or stopping to rest for a few moments.

A few Ruby-crowned Kinglets bounced from branch to branch.

A Muskrat was swimming back and forth across the Salwein Creek.

American Robins were gathering nesting material.

A Skimmer stopped on a blade of grass at the Salwein Creek.

Song Sparrows were easy to find.

Barn Swallows, Rough-winged Swallows, Violet-green Swallows and Tree Swallows used the overhead wires to rest, play and chatter.

A few Yellow-rumped Warblers looked for insects as they migrated through the area.

White-crowned Sparrows were found near the parking lot.

A tiny blue Butterfly possibly a Spring Azure was seen at the East Bird Blind.

A magnificent Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly sipped nectar from one of its favourite flower sources, known as Hesperis or Phlox.

We also saw three incredibly beautiful Ospreys at the Salwein Creek Loop. We have entered them in their own journal page.

We stopped for a visit with Val, Christine, Muriel, Alice, Marilyn, Kay, Walter, Cynthia, Leon and Pearl at the Rotary Interpretive Centre. We also saw Dawn and the Pathfinders busy outside and want to give them a special thank you for all the hard work that they do; we really appreciate them.
