Chilliwack Farms
May 26, 2010
An email saying that there were Sandhill Cranes spotted near Hazel and Graham’s house at their farm in Greendale had us scrambling to get ready and go for a visit.
When we got to the farm, we found a Eurasian Collared-Dove sitting on the ground near the edge of the driveway. It flew into a Maple tree where it looked down on us from the depths of the darkened leaves; soon, it flew onto the overhead wires to take a better look.
It was pouring rain but the White-crowned Sparrows didn’t seem to mind while they sang in the rain.
American Robins joined the chorus of the birds’ version of singing in the rain.
We didn’t find the Sandhill Cranes but we enjoyed Hazel’s flowers, she is an accomplished gardener and we would have liked to take more photos of her beautiful posies but it was really dark and wet and we didn’t have the right lens to do them justice. We took a photo of her lovely double Clematis before heading off down the driveway.
Along the edge of the driveway, we came across a Killdeer so we stopped for a moment to take photos and give it a chance to move away without scaring it.
As we were driving home, we happened to notice the two Sandhill Cranes in a farm field off in the distance. So, we pulled off the road and from the fence, we stood and took numerous photos of them standing doing not much but we enjoyed seeing two magnificent birds resting for awhile on their migratory flight to their nesting grounds.
Thanks to the farms and the people that run them, we not only receive quality foods but we also have places for these wonderful creatures to rest on their long journeys. We realize that the farms are our resources for fresh foods and it takes a lot of hard work to run them, so we respect the properties and the people that run them for without them we would be in dire need.
We are not authorities on birds, wildlife, plants, cameras or photography, if you are doing research on any subjects, please refer to a more educational site for advice and double-check whatever you research.
