Migrants
May 6th & 7th 2010
We were lucky enough to get a call from Rick to go see another influx of Black-bellied Plovers accompanied by little Dunlin and an American Golden Plover in a farm field in East Chilliwack. We took a drive out there on two different days to see these wonderful birds. There is a wet spot in the field which is perhaps an annoyance to the farmer but a very special spot for these little birds that are travelling all the way up to the farthest points in North America for their nesting time. It is so important that there are these small wet areas for these birds to stop along the way, to rest and gather insects from the fields. The long journey ahead is full of perils and we were delighted to find them enjoying a moment’s peace on their way north. They were foraging for insects when a Bald Eagle flew overhead causing them to burst into flight until the danger was over. Luckily for us, they landed closer to the road where we were standing. If you are interested in bird watching, it is important to give the landowners and farm workers respect. Stay off their land and out of the way of the farm machinery, trucks and wagons that are on the road. These people are at work and do not need us in their way. We enjoyed meeting Rick, Dave, Janne, Dave and Jeff during our short time out to see these lovely visitors to our city.
