Road Trip Day 3
Morning
June 23, 2010

In the morning of the third day out, we stopped at Chichester Park, a lovely jewel of nature in Rutland. It was early in the morning and the sounds emanating from the surrounding trees and marshes were incredibly lovely. There were Yellow-breasted Chats, Gray Catbirds, California Quail, Mourning Doves and many voices that we could not recognize all blended together in a chorus that was enthralling. We wandered around the paths wishing that we had more time to spend here. This is one park that we will visit again. A quick photo of a Mourning Dove in the morning sun and a few Painted Turtles on a log and we were off to our next place of interest

Robert Lake is a lake about 5 km or so from Chichester Park and we thoroughly enjoyed this lovely lake. It is fenced off and there is a viewing area but you need good binoculars or a long lens to get any photos of the birds on the water or water’s edge.

Western Meadowlarks were singing on fence posts.

Yellow-headed Blackbirds were enjoying the marsh plants.

The birds that had drawn us to this lake were there flying over our heads and way, way, way out in the distance, they were foraging along the shoreline. Two American Avocets were among tiny little sandpipers and other shorebirds like the Greater Yellowlegs, as well as Killdeer. We heard later when we arrived home that there were more American Avocets and an Avocet chick seen since we had visited.
