Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary
August 20, 2010

Another trip to the coast for a visit to Boundary Bay where we found quite a few gulls, Black-bellied Plovers and tons of Sandpipers wheeling over the waters of the bay and landing on tiny little islands of grass sticking up in the incoming tide. We didn’t venture out onto the shore but stayed up on the dike to watch this wonderful display. We enjoyed a quick talk with ebirdman and his son David; they are both accomplished photographers. Here is a link to their Flickr photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ebirdman/

We stopped at George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary again for another walk; here is the link to their website: http://www.reifelbirdsanctuary.com/

Dozens of Dowitchers added interest to our walk.

A pair of young Eagles flew overhead in an aerial display.

Rock Pigeons were near the entrance with hopes of getting fed.

Pintail Ducks were flying overhead and found in the waters along the way.

Tiny little Semipalmated Plovers flew with dozens of Sandpipers and landed just out of good camera range.

Tons of little Sandpipers were seen foraging in the shallows and mud.

Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs were fun to photograph.

As we were walking along, we ran into mnlamberson, she is a great wildlife photographer and we enjoyed meeting her. Here is a link to her Flickr photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/vitrain/

We mentioned to mnlamberson that the Black-crowned Night Herons have always eluded us on our visits to the sanctuary, so she took us to the area where they “hang” out and to our surprise and delight we found one of them enjoying a good preen in on a branch.
