April, 2015

April 4, 2015

There is always something to photograph and watch in nature at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack.

Golden-crowned Sparrows were molting into their breeding plumage.

Bufflehead Ducks are still being seen.

Great Blue Herons were busy near the Heronry.

Dark-eyed Juncos were seen along the trails.

Spotted Towhees were seen as well.

Mallards were seen as usual.

One Canada Goose was seen on a nest while another pair got excited when a Mink swam past them. We watched the Mink as it travelled along the slough, sometimes getting out of the water, other times swimming. It had an entourage following it to make sure it wasn’t going to bother anything. There were Common Mergansers, Canada Geese and Green-winged Teal following and watching the Mink very closely.

A Purple Finch was seen in the trees at the Salwein Creek.

A Ruby-crowned Kinglet was also nearby.

Red-winged Blackbirds were seen in good numbers.

Song Sparrows were also seen in good numbers.

There were quite a few Tree and Violet-green Swallows seen.

A small flock of Green-winged Teal started to performing a bonding “water dance” while we watched from the dike above the slough just past the Heronry.

Three Yellowlegs were seen in a puddle in the nearby farm field.

Male Common Yellowthroats were defending their nesting sites along the farm fence.

We enjoyed seeing Brenda with Finnegan, Sandra with Izzy and Rick on the trails, we also enjoyed chatting with Gordon and Dick at the Rotary Interpretive Centre Gift Shop.
