May 4, 2008

It was so nice to feel warm outside today, as we were walking along to the Salwein Creek Loop; we spotted a Northern Flicker sitting on the picnic table.

We took our time and wandered along the Salwein Creek Loop, talking to people and watching the birds. We ran into Ted and his daughter Robin and granddaughter and had a nice chat with them. We spent some time photographing an American Robin, the Common Yellowthroat, some American Goldfinch, and a Song Sparrow.

Other people came along and we enjoyed a quick chat with strangers that were also enjoying the sun and nature. We got a few frog photos while we were walking and talking. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a friendly place where people nod and say hello to each other as they enjoy the peace there.

As we were wandering along, we ran into Gail, a really talented Artist and Gary, they told us that they had spotted a new bird behind the East Bird Blind and showed us a photo. We went directly to the East Bird Blind and there to our delight was a pair of Blue-winged Teal. This was a first sighting of this species for us and we were happy that they were busy dabbling behind the blind and weren’t going anywhere. We spent a long time photographing them, into the sun which was unfortunate but well worth the time spent watching them together. They didn’t get very far away from each other and did a little head bobbing display for us as well as a complete tour of the marsh behind the blind. We left the blind and the two Blue-winged Teal still busy enjoying the sun and peace of the marsh.

As we were taking photos of a White-crowned Sparrow, we saw Leon in the distance, so we spent some time taking photos of Yellow-rumped Warblers, a pair of Chickadees with their fledglings and a Red-winged Blackbird.

While we were waiting for Leon to come up the pathway, we saw Dick leaving and gave him a wave. He had spotted a Greater Yellowlegs behind the West Bird Blind today. We had a short chat with Leon, then headed to the Rotary Interpretive Centre to say hello to Karen and Gord. Leon showed up before we left and we had another chat with him, after that we stopped to admire the work that Dawn was doing in the garden before going home to check out our photos and sit in our yard with Evening Grosbeaks, Goldfinch and a pair of nesting Chickadees.
