Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
March 14th to 17th 2011

The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, B.C., Canada is one of our favourite places to take a walk.

We enjoy the Double-crested Cormorants that visit here in the winter.

The resident Bald Eagles are usually around somewhere near the Heronry.

Northern Red-shafted Flickers were seen calling to each other from several areas.

There has been a Goldeneye Duck visiting for a few weeks now.

We watched Canada Geese having a territorial dispute in the North Lagoon while others were seen checking out old tree stumps for nesting sites.

Pied-billed Grebes were seen on both lagoons.

Great Blue Herons were found hunting for sticks and food, as well as nesting and sheltering from a nasty cold wind in marshy areas.

Common Mergansers were found fishing along the slough near the Heronry.

A female Hooded Merganser was seen several times in the same area.

American Robins were easily seen along the way.

Savannah Sparrows were seen in good sized flocks in the underbrush along the edge of the dyke road to the Heronry.

Song Sparrows were seen in the same area.

A Starling was house cleaning, preparing an old woodpecker hole for a nest site.

Green-winged Teal were seen in several areas.

Spotted Towhees were seen on a few walks.

American Wigeon were on logs at the East Bird Blind.

A Yellow-rumped Warbler was seen on a very, windy, wet day.

Wood Ducks were colourful and hunting for trees to build nests.

We stopped in at the Rotary Interpretive Centre for visits with Karen, Marcia, Dick, Jeff, Cynthia, Yvonne, Janet, Val, Barb, William, Dan, Brenda, John, Rob, Jean and Frank. We also enjoyed a visit with Arnie near the Heronry.

The Chilliwack Camera Club will be having a display of some of their nature photography in the Great Hall from March 19th to April 30th. Here is a link to their web site: http://www.chilliwackcameraclub.com/

Happy Saint Patrick's Day
