May 29, 2016

It was a busy day during our walk at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack.

Female Common Mergansers have started to gather on one particular snag. We think there is a nest hidden in the back of it where there must be eggs ready to hatch. At times, we have seen 7 females gathered on the top and others flying around it calling.

Most of the Great Blue Heron nests are hidden by leaves but there is still a chance to see a few nests if we look closely.

There is one nestling left in the Pileated nest hole. We think he will fledge soon.

There were a few young Mallard ducklings in the slough.

A male Yellow Warbler was seen at the Main Bridge.

A male Bullock’s Oriole sang from his high perch near the parking lot.

On our walk along the Lickman Road dike, we saw a male and a female Lazuli Bunting.

We saw a male Northern Flicker on a fence post.

American Robins were seen as well.

Savannah Sparrows sang from fence posts.

We watched a male and a female Common Yellowthroat gathering insects and caterpillars for their nestlings.

Weather
May 29 Cloudy/Misty 54F (12.2C)

We enjoyed seeing Leona, John Larsen, Penny and Dennis with Sunny, Shirley and Bob as well as Marilyn and Karl on the trails. We also enjoyed talking to some of the Chilliwack Field Naturalists in the parking lot, they were getting ready to go on a field trip, some attendees were Janet P., Ann, Helen, Vick and Terry.
