Whooping Cranes

We consider ourselves so very fortunate to be able to see a pair of Whooping Cranes in the wild. They are 59.1 inches (150cm) tall with a wingspan of 90.2 inches (229cm). They are one of North America’s largest birds. At present, there are only about 603 Whooping Cranes which makes them high on the endangered species list. Thanks again, to Robert, Nancy and Leeann for their help in locating these marvellous birds.

This couple were seen in the Sprague Unit of Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, in Necedah, Wisconsin. We were not as close to these lovely creatures as it looks, the photos are severely cropped. Our whole experience lasted less than three minutes, but during that time was magical. Even though we were being attacked by hundreds of mosquitoes even though we had used mosquito repellent, we could not believe how lucky we were to see these beautiful birds. Although we knew we were not too close to the Whooping Cranes we did not want to disturb them, so we left content with the short time we had watching them.
