Beaver

During our walk at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve today, we heard splashing just past the Heronry. When we got to the spot where the splashing was occurring, we found the male Beaver slapping the water with his tail. This made us look around to see what the problem was. The only thing we saw was a little Mink.

While Beaver slapped the water, his mate surfaced from under the water, pushing a Beaver kit in front of her. Occasionally the little Beaver would be totally submerged but it did not seem to bother it at all. Soon, the little fellow objected to being shoved along the water and flipped out of its mother’s grasp to head as fast as possible back to where the adult male was slapping the water. Of course, the female pursued the little kit and caught up to it just as it dived under the water.

This same procedure happened at least four times, whether it was with one kit or four, we are not sure. At one point, the female managed to push the little kit about a ¼ km in the water.

We are not sure what was going on but found it all very interesting.
